The Association began its first scholarship project in 1980. During that first effort we were able to award five Cherry Hill High School graduates small book awards. However, since that time, we have provided over $220,000 in scholarships.

Jennifer Lewis-Hall

I was asked to give a little advice to students and their families and write about my success as a journalist, author and international speaker. Much of it has a lot to do with the dedication of my parents, their commitment to education and their constant message that I could be absolutely anything I wanted to become. They helped me find renowned mentors, encouraged me to work hard and reminded me constantly to continue to dream. It reminds me of the quote by Harriett Tubman who said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Changing the world and making a difference is certainly something I dreamed about then and it continues to be a lifelong pursuit.

In my second book, “Life Changes: Using the Power of Change to Transform Your Life,” I explain how change is the most powerful driving force you have in living a life that is authentically you. And, it is the linchpin for which great organizations pride themselves on when it comes to being successful and maintaining a level of excellence – especially when times are tough. This is why I love CHAACA and the people who founded this organization. They have well, evoked change, knocked down doors and opened new ones. And, they’ve done it all for wonderful students who have gone on to do great things.

I grew up in Cherry Hill, attended Cherry Hill High School East, Beck Middle School and Cooper Elementary School. My parents, Arthur and Evelyn Lewis helped launch CHAACA and have been committed to the organization since its inception. Members literally used to hold meetings in each others living rooms. They saw a need and opportunity for children of African-American decent to grow, bond and prosper academically and socially. They and others answered the call. Although this group’s first president and some other dedicated founding members, whom I knew well have since passed on, the organization and its legacy remains strong. That type of passion and commitment inspires me even today. And, again I attribute a significant part of my success to the pathways that others have forged before me. That said, organizations can only continue to thrive if people pass the torch onto future generations to ensure the group’s success. To students and their families I encourage you to continue to dream, and keep this torch that CHAACA has lit burning bright. You’ll be amazed how your participation really can and does make a difference in your own lives and the lives of others for years to come.
