About the Cherry Hill African American Civic Association

The Cherry Hill African-American Civic Association was organized in 1978 to provide a vehicle for the participation of minority residents in community life in Cherry Hill. In 1984, under the direction of President Robert Moose, and with the assistance of former Senator Lee B. Laskin, the organization became incorporated and obtained its tax-exempt status. Our name was changed in 2005 to more accurately reflect who we are.

The association, although non-partisan in nature, encourages active participation by its membership in all levels of the election process, as well as participation in civic activities. We sponsor "Black History Month" programs, host informal "political forums", and invite various speakers to monthly meetings. Our guests speak on topics ranging from affordable housing, education, taxes, police and firefighter hires, etc.

The association began its first scholarship project in 1980. During that first effort we were able to award five Cherry Hill High School graduates small book awards. However, since that time, we have provided over $220,000 in scholarships. In 1982, the organization began raising funds for scholarships through our "Cherry Blossom Scholarship Ball". Each year since then, we have been able to sustain our high level of giving through various fundraising efforts, including an Ad Book campaign and casino bus trips.

In 1988, the Scholarship Ad Campaign inspired the interest of the Ravitz family. The Association thereafter established the "Stanley Ravitz" Scholarship Award which has generated over $68,000 in awards. Stanley has passed on and his sons Steve & Ron have picked up the gauntlet. Other sponsors have also established scholarships, which are provided to deserving students. These awards are provided to college bound students who are actively involved in community, church and school.

Today, the association continues its efforts to raise funds for scholarships through various fundraising activities.
